What is a side step? Running sideways?

I assumed the sidestep was like the carioca drills in HS football. Here's a link, click on the avi file: http://www.fitrex.com/fitness_info/exercise1359.html
The carioca drill is great for hip flexion and rotation and opening up the hips for quickness and agility.
But it might be like pendulum stepping where the legs don't cross. This is common in wrestling and I have done a lot of this as well in stick fighting.
Here's cool link to some JKD/Filipino Martial Arts footwork patterns: http://www.geocities.com/jkdinstructor/footwork.html?200610
Either one will be a challenge to do a 1/4 mile of!

In executing the side step for this workout the legs/feet should not crossover. So, outside of front shoulder is pointing in the direction of travel along with the outside of the front foot. The front foot moves forward, plants and the back foot comes forward to meet it, then repeat...as Allan described, like a pendulum.

Couldn't do the running b/c of the knee. But instead did a Baby Painstorm Lite since I have to test in FMA in the morning.
Baby Painstorm Lite
10 Round
5 X 65lb Deadlift
5 X 65lb Power Clean
5 X 65lb Front Squat
5 X 65lb Push Press
8:24
The Front Squats immediately after the cleans really made me start huffin and puffin. The actual WOD painstorm is max rounds completed in 40 minutes. Great Oogly Googly!
